Call my MUSCLE CARS a bunch of pony cars. I know how to hit that DISMISS BUTTON.

Hey.
Hey.
Hey.
Your Trans Am?
It's a pony car.

which ones did you post?
because...Mustang, Camaro, Firebird, Challenger are all pony cars...

...I thought muscle cars and pony cars were the same thing...

Long nose short trunk, the formula for pony car.

This is always going to be a gray area.
But in my definition, the Muscle Cars were standard normal mid-size/full size cars that got turned into crazy performance monsters.
Pony cars were designed to be that way from the beginning, only came as coupes/2 doors. They also had a lot more emphasis on handling than outright power upgrades.

Not if you work in the marketing department of any of the big 3...

I do and I have.
And I think everyone else that works with me doesn't know what they're talking about calling them Muscle cars.
EDIT- with the exception of the SS (and it's siblings) and the Charger.

Pony cars I consider stock, small displacement small cars, like the ones you stated. But throw a big motor in there, wider tires, and go racin'? MUSCLE car.

Yea but the Charger is all wrong. Too many doors...

I think in this case you are both right. I'm old enough to remember when all of the cars you mentioned were called pony cars.

That's a good definition as well.
![]() 10/13/2014 at 14:39 |

I'm sure there's a perfectly good definition, but quite frankly I treat the muscle/pony car thing in the same way I treat the Donk/Box/Potatofrog thing, I just don't need a tight description, one name for all is good enough for me. As for sports/super cars...

I respectfully disagree. Trans-Am racers, to me, are the epitome of pony cars. Relatively small and light with relatively small-displacement engines. Z/28, Boss 302, 'Cuda AAR, etc.
Get in to more intermediates and full-size cars with big blocks, more emphasis on straight-line speed and less on handling? Muscle car.

I disagree. Pony cars were the road racers.
This is from a different comment, but its the best I seem to be able to sum up my feelings on the categories:
The Sports Car vs Muscle Car vs Pony Car will always be a gray area. The Corvette is firmly in the Sports Car section though.
Muscle to me = standard mid/full size car that they just so happened to cram tons of motor into
Pony to me = 2 door only/coupe only car with 4 or 5 seats that has probably the same big motor/power from the Muscle car but with more epmhasis on handling
Sports to me= 2 door 2 seat emphasis on both power and handling.

I agree, though Muscle Cars were available in all kinds of formats, 2 door, 4 door, wagon

Funny, I recommended a '64 Malibu built by Mark Stielow and only got one star. Meanwhile the Corvette has ten.

Your stupid Camry is neither a muscle car nor a pony car.

I just hate the term "Pony Car", unless you're talking about a Mustang.

Is that because you don't want your Trans Am in the same category as Mustang? Or not in the category that Mustang CREATED?
It just is, that's why the Camaro/Firebird were first created - to compete with the Mustang in that category that had never existed before.

I didn't see it...

True, I just have a bone to pick with the Charger as the good version (what they were aiming to bring back) was a 2 door.
![]() 10/13/2014 at 14:57 |

YES.
![]() 10/13/2014 at 14:58 |

Yes it angers me quite a bit, always has. I wish it wasn't even called a Charger because of it.
Especially because the Challenger came along is basically a 2 door Charger so there's no chance of them fixing the problem.

hahaha, don't be sad mr Pony Car Driver.
The Camaro/Firebird made a case that they were as good if not better than the Mustang the first time one was built. I wouldn't feel too insecure...

Nope, never going to happen.

I'm sorry but the Firebird is defined as a pony car.
